... Storm damage survey in Abilene from last night's severe storm... A National Weather Service storm survey team investigated storm damage today in Abilene. They saw evidence of straight line wind damage across a large part of the city. The worst damage was near The Mall in Abilene... and on the east side of town. Based on the damage survey... the strong straight line thunderstorm wind gusts from the north northeast were estimated at 75 to 85 mph with isolated higher gusts to near 90 mph. These high winds snapped telephone polls... and broke large glass windows in The Mall... albertsons grocery store... and on furniture row. The strong winds also uprooted trees... broke large tree limbs... knocked down power lines... tore the roof off of a an Industrial building... removed metal from the albertsons roof... and knocked over tractor trailers. A freeway sign was also blown down on the Winters freeway by the interchange at loop 322. The high winds also blew large pieces of metal off of a storage facility a couple of blocks into the front yard of a nearby residence. Numerous Road signs were also bent... restaurant signs were broken... and many fences were knocked down from the high winds. |
