Flash Flood Warning

Statement as of 6:40 PM EDT on May 23, 2013


... A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 745 PM EDT for
Passaic... western Union... Westchester... Bergen... Essex and Rockland
counties...

At 636 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
that heavy rain had moved out of the flash flood area... but small
streams in the warned area are still in flood and rising.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Several small streams in the warning area are in flood... and should
be cresting between now and 8 PM.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
If you are in the warning area move to higher ground immediately.
Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate
precautions to protect life and property. Do not attempt to cross
swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by
automobile.

The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued an

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for minor flooding of poor
drainage areas in...
southeastern Orange County in southeast New York...
Putnam County in southeast New York...
extreme western Rockland County in southeast New York...
far northern Westchester County in southeast New York...
western Passaic County in northeast New Jersey...

* until 800 PM EDT...

* at 557 PM EDT... radar showed heavy showers and thunderstorms
moving into these areas. Up to an additional inch of rain is
possible through 8 PM.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Minor flooding means that although streams and creeks may rise out of
their banks... property damage will be minimal. Inconveniences can be
expected but the flooding will not be immediately life threatening.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. Most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Turn around and
find another Route.

A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for areas just to the south
and east until 745 PM.

Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases... or a
warning is issued.
