Special Weather Statement

Statement as of 5:03 PM MST on November 21, 2008/

... Colder and wetter weather expected for the middle of next
week and the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend...

A significant change in the weather pattern will occur Tuesday and
continue through the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Although there
remains some uncertainty in the specific details... it is looking
increasingly likely that two separate storm systems will impact
the area during this time frame. The first of these systems looks
to approach the coast of California by Tuesday afternoon and move
across our area Tuesday night into Wednesday afternoon. This
system has the potential to bring widespread precipitation to the
Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin... with snow showers across
the higher elevations. Snow levels are expected to lower to
around 6000 feet by Wednesday afternoon and may be lower locally
in heavier bursts of precipitation. Gusty wind are also possible
mainly ahead of this system on Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday
night.

A second and even colder storm system may impact the area as early
as Thanksgiving afternoon... but more likely on Friday afternoon into
Saturday. This system will be even colder... and thus snow levels
will be even lower... dropping to between 5000 and 5500 feet by
Friday night into Saturday afternoon. Once again... snow levels may
lower locally in heavier bursts of precipitation. In the lower
elevations rain showers are expected. Due to the clouds... showers
and northerly flow... below normal temperatures are expected from
Thanksgiving day through the remainder of the Holiday weekend.

Those planning travel next week or people with any outdoor plans
for the Holiday weekend should keep informed with the latest
forecasts and be prepared to encounter winter driving conditions
in the mountains. Although the lower elevations are only expected
to see rainfall from these systems... roadways here may become
slippery and drivers should remember to exercise caution by
slowing down and leaving plenty of room in between you and the
vehicle in front of you.
