Statement as of 2:40 am MST on July 9, 2008/

... Excessive heat warning remains in effect from 11 am PDT /11 am
MST/ this morning to 8 PM PDT /8 PM MST/ this evening...

An excessive heat warning remains in effect for areas below 4000
feet in Inyo... San Bernardino... Nye... Clark and Mohave counties from
11 am this morning to 8 PM this evening.

A strong area of high pressure will hold over the area through
today... bringing dangerously high temperatures. High temperatures
are forecast to be 111 to 113 degrees in the Las Vegas
Valley... Barstow and Twentynine Palms... from 115 to 117 degrees
in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area... Laughlin... Needles...
Mesquite... Lake Havasu City... Bullhead City... and near 125 degrees
in Death Valley.

If you plan to be outside... avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous
physical activity. Your body can lose up to a gallon of water an
hour through perspiration... so drink plenty of fluids to avoid
dehydration. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages should be avoided
because they can increase the rate of water loss in your
body... increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or stroke. Wear
light weight... light colored... loose fitting clothing. Wear a hat
to shield yourself from the sunshine and use a sunscreen to reduce
the risk of sunburn.
